At the December 2023 hearing on shelter food, representatives of health and hospitals responsible for asylum seeker shelters said that they have secured halal food ever since the city first saw large numbers of Muslim asylum seekers from West Africa seeking shelter in October 2022, that it had secured halal food.

However, as reported by CBS and Hellgate Muslim Muslim shelter residents and volunteers complained about the food they received which was provided by Riviera Catering slash RC Stillwell LLC.
