Council Member Linda Lee asks clarifying questions about DOHMH's opposition to the 450 feet rule and its potential impact on syringe service programs.

  • Lee seeks to understand if the opposition is due to potential redundancy with existing SSP requirements
  • She draws a parallel to campaigns restricting cigarette advertising near schools and religious institutions
  • Linn-Walton clarifies that DOHMH wants to be able to pick up litter close to schools and respond to community requests in parks with playgrounds
  • The discussion highlights the complexity of balancing community responsiveness with proposed regulations

I actually have a couple clarifying questions based on your questions.
0:53:09
So is the opposition to the 450 feet rule in a school because from what I am what I think I'm hearing you saying is that the reason why you're opposed to it is because would sort of almost be redundant to the requirements of SSPs and not allow them to do their work within a certain feed of schools, which actually does include syringe pickup as well, if I'm understanding what he's I just want clarifying.
0:53:37
Yeah.
0:53:38
Okay.
0:53:38
Sorry.
Rebecca Linn-Walton

So part of it is I'm gonna put on my social work hat and say I'm not part I'm not a lawyer.
0:53:43
And so part of it is law is looking into whether state regulations may interfere with that.
0:53:50
So they're looking into that.
0:53:51
But as far as I could say, yes, absolutely.
0:53:54
We want to be able to pick up litter close to schools.
0:53:57
And then also we want to be able to address some parks with playgrounds have directly asked us to come provide efforts and bring people into the drop in center and other sources as well.
0:54:08
So we want to be community responsive and so those are the only things we're thinking about.
Linda Lee

So maybe that's something we could look into in terms of clarifying the language of the bill too.
