Council Member Avilés inquires about the repurposing of $630,000 from WeSpeak to immigrant rights workshops. MOIA officials explain that this was done to meet the demand for Know Your Rights workshops following the federal election.

  • $693,000 was reallocated for rapid response initiatives
  • 12 out of 17 current contracted providers opted into this expanded scope
  • The reallocation includes funding for printed materials and administrative fees

Very efficient service we got going on here.
3:07:47
So it seems that about $630,000 has been repurposed from WeSpeak to the immigrants rights workshops.
3:08:00
Can you talk to us about that repurposing of funding?
Jasniya Sanchez
3:08:06
I'll briefly start and then I'll pass it on to my colleague.
Alexa Avilés
3:08:11
Can you speak closer to the mic?
Jasniya Sanchez
3:08:12
Sorry.
3:08:13
Can you hear me?

3:08:14
So this funding was repurposed to meet the demand Know Your Rights workshops.
3:08:28
This was post federal election.
3:08:35
As part of a rapid response as an office, we saw the need to ensure that there was reliable information for the community there.
3:08:48
So that was the repurposing of that funding.
3:08:55
We held conversations with our current contracted providers under the Immigrant Rights Workshops initiative to be able to expand their scope in terms of the number of workshops delivered.
3:09:16
And as a result, 12 of the 17 current contractor providers opted in to this rapid response initiative.
3:09:29
Right?
3:09:30
And they started delivering on these new added deliverables as of January 1, but I'll let my colleague Lorena speak more about this.
Lorena Lucero
3:09:44
Oh, they started the week of January 13.
3:09:47
And as my colleague mentioned, it was because of the need of providing additional information and touch points with community members.
3:10:00
We touched on this a bit in the hearing of January 16, but it's a very targeted outreach.
3:10:08
We are providing services and information in Herx with the and so that's shelters.
3:10:15
The Department of Education, as I mentioned to council member Joseph, we're working closely with them to identify schools and to do them in the languages that are needed, public libraries, as well as faith based institutions.
3:10:30
And just for for the numbers, we are partnering with 12.
3:10:36
There's gonna be a total of 240 presentations.
Alexa Avilés
3:10:39
And in terms of the how much was specifically allocated for this purpose?
Jasniya Sanchez
3:10:47
We reallocated 693,000 for this purpose.
3:10:51
Also some of that funding has gone towards our printed material efforts as well.
