This chapter explores the design concept and inspiration behind Metropolitan Park, as presented by Greg Pascarelli of SHoP Architects.

  • The design aims to right the wrongs of Robert Moses by reconnecting the park to the waterfront and surrounding communities.
  • Inspiration was drawn from the natural beauty of the area, architectural heritage, and the history of the World's Fair sites.
  • The plan features a series of flat-iron shaped buildings surrounding a park, reminiscent of the original Ebbets Field.
  • The design incorporates elements from both the 1939 and 1964 World's Fairs, blending historical references with modern needs.

My name is Greg Pascarelli, I'm a founding partner of SHOP Architects here in New York.

This has been an incredible undertaking with an incredibly supportive client and wonderful engagement with the community over the years that we have developed the plan.

Next slide.

As Julissa was talking about here, you could see on the left the original plan for the thirty nine World's Fair site.
0:16:41
You could see the idea was always to kind of get the park up to the Flushing Bay.
0:16:46
But what you see in the next slide was actually how Robert Moe's oh, sorry.
0:16:50
Not the next slide.

The next image.

Back on.
0:16:52
Thanks.
0:16:53
Is the parking lots that were built there.
0:16:55
You could see them in white at the top.
0:16:57
And then Moses then used his authority as the parks commissioner to take that land and drive highways through it, separating the park from the surrounding communities.
0:17:09
What one of the most incredible opportunities here is how many times do we get the chance to right the wrongs of Robert Moses, and that has been a driving theme throughout the design of this project.

So when we originally looked at it, we thought about some of the natural beauty, we thought about the architectural heritage and the history of the site, and it was really about making a connection to get the park back up to the waterfront and to help heal some of the East West connections to the communities.

What we ended up was the series of sort of shapes of forms that where you had kind of major flows of people and parkland that kind of created these flat iron shapes.
0:17:50
We looked at the original Ebbets Field, which was the inspiration for Citi Field, and started to think of these series of flat iron buildings surrounding a park.

We looked at the architectural history of the site, some of the buildings from the thirty nine World's Fair.

0:18:07
The sixty four World's Fair, far more Jetsons kind of looking, but very, very cool and very important as well, next, and came up with this plan.
0:18:17
And so the plan really sort of centers at the seven train MTA station, will be rebuilt.
0:18:25
We'll show you some images of that.
0:18:26
It drives a 25 acre park through to the north, also to the east and west to the new soccer stadium.
0:18:36
And then on the east side, could see is the new integrated resort with the venue, the gaming, hotels, entertainment, food and beverage.
0:18:44
What we've also tried to do is build all of the there's new structured parking around the site, and we're trying to keep all the cars on the perimeter on the site and have the center for pedestrian only use.
