Council Member Gale Brewer inquires about the Department of Correction's plan to reduce fixed posts and their impact on overtime. Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie explains the department's approach to balancing post reductions with the need for consistency and continuity in operations.

  • The department has reduced some posts but recognizes the importance of consistent staffing for safety and security
  • The process of assigning staff to posts is ongoing and fluid, adapting to changing needs
  • The department aims to do what's best for both staff and people in their care

Thank you very much.
2:45:08
I think last week budget director Hia said fixed posts contribute to your overtime.
2:45:13
He was talking about, DOC.
2:45:16
Last May, I believe you said, commissioner, that we're looking at it now.
2:45:20
The reduction in awarded posts.
2:45:22
So ten months later, where is that plan?
Lynelle Maginley-Liddie
2:45:26
So we we have we have reduced some posts, but we also recognize that if individuals assigned to posts, especially posts with facing persons in custody, there's continuity and consistency, and that they show up, they know every single day where they're assigned, that that helps with running a safe and secure jail system.
Gale Brewer
2:45:51
All right, so you're going to continue that program?
Lynelle Maginley-Liddie
2:45:53
Yeah, and you know, the way how this process works is if you up for your tour on any given day, you should be able to know which housing area you're going to.
2:46:06
And it provides for consistency and continuity in operations.
2:46:11
So it's an ongoing process, but it's also we're evaluating as we go along.
2:46:15
It's fluid, things change, and we want to make sure we're doing what's best for our staff and for people in our care.
Gale Brewer
2:46:21
Okay.
