Deputy Commissioner Kajori Chaudhuri provides a comprehensive overview of the types of trainings and outreach sessions conducted by CCHR's Community Engagement Bureau. The trainings fall into three main categories: know your rights, competency trainings, and bystander intervention trainings.

  • Know your rights trainings cover topics like overview of human rights law, housing discrimination, and protections related to immigration status
  • Competency trainings focus on vulnerable communities and are often created in partnership with other entities
  • Bystander intervention trainings aim to equip New Yorkers with tools to intervene in situations of bias or discrimination

Can you just share a little bit about what types of trainings and outreach sessions the community engagement bureau hosts?
1:00:04
And I just, you know, said this just now to Ali that, you know, unless I like do a scavenger hunt on your website, I don't really know what you guys do.
1:00:15
And I don't know if this is because we're not in regular communication.
1:00:20
I mean, I know I've been trying to schedule a meeting with you all which I feel like it's been a little difficult having to like submit things to even meet with you all just to understand because you should know like I like to know what's going on so I can have informed questions and not say things that are not true or not accurate and so the more I actually know about what you're doing, the better I can speak to the issues and ask questions that are like relevant instead of random stuff because we're just council members on a mic asking questions.
1:00:49
So I just wanted to like tell you who I am as a person is like no, I actually just want to know what's going on.
1:00:54
So if you can share with us the range of trainings and sessions you guys have.
Kajori Chaudhuri
1:01:00
Absolutely.
1:01:01
And council member, we always welcome partnerships.
1:01:04
Right?
1:01:05
Like your office, and we've partnered with, regarding the fair housing, and I'm sorry, the source of income, resource fair we did in Major Mark Park year before last.
1:01:16
So relationships, we depend on council relationships to get the information out.
1:01:22
I am happy to talk about our trainings because that's our trainings fall in three kind of buckets.
1:01:28
On one hand, our our know your rights training, which are the core of our work.
1:01:33
Right?
1:01:33
Like, they are trainings like overview

the human rights law.
1:01:38
They are training around housing discrimination.
1:01:41
In recent times, we've pivoted and created a new training on human rights law and protections, regarding immigration status, citizenship, citizenship and immigration status and national origin, and, the trainings on Fair Trans Act.
1:01:57
So those are our core know your rights, know understand your rights and obligations training.
1:02:04
On the other piece of it are our competency training.
1:02:07
So our competency trainings are typically created in partnership with different entities, whether they're academic partners or other community based partners, those trainings focus on vulnerable communities.
1:02:23
So, for example, we have our working with transgender and gender nonconforming communities training.
1:02:30
We have our understanding Jewish experience in antisemitism.
1:02:34
We have our understanding Muslim experience in, combating anti Muslim bias training.
1:02:39
We have our race and color discrimination training.
1:02:42
Those fall in that competency trainings, which are, again, part of understanding of different communities and, fall into the fostering of intergroup relations part of our work.
1:02:55
And on the third bucket, I would say, we have what we call our our bystander intervention trainings.
1:03:01
These trainings have been really critical in, again, ensuring that communities are like, people in New York City are aware and, can, you know, look into a situation, make a safety assessment, and then use any of the tools of intervention to intervene if when they see an, incident of bias or discrimination take place.
1:03:25
So, so our trainings fall into these three different buckets, and, we are always looking to, like, you know, expand.
1:03:33
We, you know, just like look at the needs and then ensure that, you know, we're creating new ones to meet the moment.
