Council Member Hanks inquires about the use of the Save America's Treasures grant by the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC). Chair Carroll explains that the $88,000 federal funding will be used for a two-year project in the archaeology department, involving scanning documents and photographing artifacts.
- The grant will be used to scan over 20,000 documents and photograph over 8,000 artifacts
- LPC plans multiple exhibits to make the archaeological repository more accessible to the public
- Discussion on potential partnerships with other institutions like the Staten Island Museum
- LPC typically applies for one to two federal grants per year, often through the state as a certified local government

So Save America's Treasures grant and federal funding.
1:29:30
In the preliminary plan, 88,000 federal funding is added to LPC in fiscal twenty twenty five from the Save America's Treasure grant.
1:29:38
How will the commission use this funding?
Sarah Carroll
1:29:41
So this is a two year project that is related to our archaeology department and our archaeology repository.
1:29:50
And so the grant will be used really for scanning and recording these artifacts.
1:29:57
And we will be scanning over 20,000 documents and photographing over 8,000 artifacts.
1:30:05
And as part of that, we are also planning multiple exhibits of these artifacts to make this archaeological repository more accessible to the public.
Kamillah Hanks
1:30:15
So you know what my next sorry.
1:30:17
What?
1:30:17
So you know what my next question is.
1:30:19
Hopefully there's equity in boroughs across New York City, particularly Staten Island.
1:30:25
So would it be something that, like the funding say the Staten Island Museum who also collects artifacts and has that sort of initiative, can there be partnerships with the
Sarah Carroll
1:30:39
So the grant is, it's administered by the National Park Service in partnership with NEA and NEH, and the agency applied for the grant specifically to make our our the the artifacts within the archaeological repository accessible to the public.
1:30:58
So we have deliverables to return on that grant, and so I don't know that there's partnership, but we can certainly maybe provide guidance or work to help them find resources the way we do.
1:31:12
Our staff has been incredibly successful finding grants and applying for grants, and we're happy to share the guidance on that.
Kamillah Hanks
1:31:18
How would you say how many federal grants are do you apply each year?
Sarah Carroll
1:31:24
I I would say in recent years it's been one to two.
1:31:29
Some of most of them are through actually the state.
1:31:33
So as a certified local government, we can get we can apply to the state for grants, and that those state grants are partially funded by federal funds.
Kamillah Hanks
1:31:42
Okay, so that leads me to my next question.
1:31:44
Is there any other grant that LPC is currently applying for that is currently waiting a response?
Sarah Carroll
1:31:52
We don't have any pending applications.
