Council Member Brooks-Powers asks about DCP's plans to prioritize homeownership opportunities for working families, particularly in outer borough communities. Dan Garodnick outlines how the City of Yes for Housing Opportunity initiative addresses this goal.

  • The initiative includes opportunities for 'missing middle' type apartment buildings near transit or above commercial strips, which are less expensive to build and more suitable for homeownership.
  • Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are proposed to make it easier for first-time homebuyers by providing potential revenue streams.
  • DCP is open to further collaboration with the council to find ways to support first-time homebuyers and homeownership in general through zoning regulations.

My next question is how does DCP plan to prioritize homeownership opportunities for working families, particularly in outer borough communities?
0:46:54
As you know, through the converse the many conversations we had around city of Versus, that was a huge focal point for me.

And I just wanna know what the game plan is now that it has been, not as CVS in particular has been planned, but just in general understanding that this council has, been committed to to trying to create opportunities for homeownership?
Dan Garodnick
0:47:20
Yes.
0:47:21
Thank you, council member.
0:47:22
Appreciate the question.
0:47:23
We share your goal in trying to create more opportunities here, for homeownership.
0:47:29
We think that there are a couple of component parts even in City Of Yes for housing opportunity, which do just that.
0:47:36
Certainly, the opportunity to create what we called, as you will remember, missing middle type apartment buildings, those that are either close to transit or above commercial strips, are much they're less expensive to build.
0:47:52
They are also smaller.
0:47:54
They are the sorts of buildings which I think that there will be many more opportunities for homeownership.
0:48:00
Similarly, through the process of accessory dwelling units that some of your colleagues were asking me about how to activate a few minutes ago, we think that that will make it easier for first time home buyers because they can actually potentially find a revenue stream to make it easier for them to make that first purchase.
0:48:17
But we also look forward to working with you and your colleagues to find ways to make it easier for either first time homebuyers or homebuyers more generally.
0:48:27
But through zoning, which, you know, I try to make it super compelling.
0:48:32
We're talking about bulk and use and location.
0:48:35
Through bulk use and location, we think that we've created the certain types of forms of buildings which will be well suited for home ownership.

Thank you, and thank you for, continuing to have an open door around these conversations.
0:48:51
Much appreciated.
0:48:52
Thank you, chair.
Dan Garodnick
0:48:53
Always.
0:48:53
Thank you.

Thank you, council member.
