Council Member Yusef Salaam asks about MOCJ's strategies to address the increasing jail population due to people with mental health diagnoses and case delays. MOCJ Director Deanna Logan outlines their approach.

  • MOCJ is collaborating with Correctional Health Services and Health and Hospitals to improve services for the growing population with mental health needs.
  • They are assessing appropriate caseloads and personnel needs for partner providers.
  • Emphasis is placed on ensuring appropriate housing for individuals to thrive.
  • The Brad H population within DOC custody has grown significantly, even in recent months.

Right now we're working with our partners in correctional health services and health and hospitals to really think about what the services are to address that population because we know from the data what is referred to as Brad H and the individuals within DOC custody is growing significantly and even within just the time from December to now we have seen that population grow.

So it is looking at the opportunities to provide stronger services for that population to get the level of personnel that needs, that our partner providers will need to assess what caseloads should look like when we're dealing with that population.

And then always it comes back to making sure that there is the appropriate housing for individuals to thrive.
