Council Member Lincoln Restler urges support for Resolution 740, which aims to ensure that all ballot proposals from the City Council or voters can reach the ballot without obstruction from mayoral charter revision commissions. He emphasizes the democratic importance of allowing voters to make the final decision on these proposals.
- Restler criticizes the use of last-minute charter revision commissions by mayors to block good proposals from reaching voters.
- He acknowledges the original sponsorship of the bill by former Assembly Member Dick Godfried and current sponsors Assembly Member Tony Simone and State Senator Liz Krueger.
- The council member highlights Speaker Adrian Adams' championing of the idea to allow multiple competing Charter Revision Commissions' ideas to reach voters.

Thank you, madam majority leader.

I hope that you all will support resolution seven forty today, which calls on this which would essentially ensure that all ballot proposals that come from the city council or come from the voters are actually able to reach the ballot.

For administration after administration, mayor after mayor has used charter revision commissions, some organized at the eleventh and a half hour to block good proposals from reaching the ultimate decision makers, the voters.

This is undemocratic and it's unfair.

So I am immensely grateful to originally the great assembly member Dick Godfried for originally sponsoring this bill, the longest serving assembly member in the history of the body, and now assembly member Tony Simone, his successor, and and the great state senator Liz Krueger for sponsoring this legislation in Albany.

It has been championed by our speaker, Adrian Adams, who has really pushed for this idea to ensure that even if there are multiple competing Charter Revision Commissions, all of their ideas should reach the final decision makers, the voters.

This is the right thing to do for our democracy, and I hope that with the strong passage today, we can all advocate together for passage in Albany.
