Council Member Brewer inquires about a decrease in ASAP graduation rates over the past three years. CUNY officials explain that while there has been a decline, ASAP students still graduate at a rate 50% higher than non-ASAP students. They attribute the decline to COVID-related learning loss and mention efforts to address this issue.

  • ASAP graduation rates decreased from 44% in 2022 to 36% in 2024
  • CUNY is partnering with NYC public schools to provide additional support services
  • The trend is starting to reverse, with rates now higher than the previous year

So according to our material from the PMMR that we were talking about ASAP, there was a decrease in the last three years in terms of students graduating from forty four percent in '22 to thirty six percent in 02/04 despite the funding.

So I'm just wondering what the cause is, and I also wanna know if it's true of ASAP.

The decline in the graduation rate is accurate.

However, it still is 50% higher for ASAP students, the three year graduation rate, than for non ASAP students.

What we have struggled with as has the DOE is the impact and the learning loss from COVID and we are exploring and partnering with New York City public schools on what additional support services and academic supports are needed to lift all of the students.

But the decline did occur, and this is the first year it's actually higher.

So that trend, we are hoping that we we are now changing that, but it's still 50% higher graduation rate for ASAP students.
