Council Member Rita Joseph inquires about SCA's target for citing new seats in each plan and the challenges in finding sites for new schools. SCA representatives explain the difficulties they face in a built-out city like New York.

  • Finding sites for new schools is challenging in a densely built city like New York
  • SCA employs four brokers who continuously search for potential sites
  • Many new seats are created through additions to existing schools due to lack of available new sites
  • Recent news about population growth raises questions about the adequacy of current site-finding efforts

Is there a target for the number of new seats the SCHR to have cited in each new plan?
6:10:15
If not, why not?
Nina Kubota
6:10:18
To have cited.
6:10:19
I think First Deputy Chancellor discussed this a little bit before.
6:10:25
It's just we are a built city and finding sites is very tough.
6:10:30
We do have four brokers that are continuously on the street looking.
6:10:35
We have a site set, Newyork City, Nycsca Dot Org for anybody to submit sites to us, but really the availability as I went through my presentation, earlier today, you'll notice a lot of them are additions because we really cannot find sites.
6:10:51
So we try, but site availability is the biggest, hurdle here.
Rita Joseph
6:10:56
And this morning in the news report I noticed that they said a lot of people have moved to New York.
6:11:04
Do you think four brokers is enough to do that large scope of work?
Nina Kubota
6:11:08
Yeah.
6:11:09
Actually they've been doing okay.
6:11:11
They've been submitting sites and again it's a pretty built environment which is why I don't think it's the brokers' faults at all.
6:11:19
I think it's really the unavailability of sites.
