Council Member Rita Joseph inquires about the number of teachers needed to meet the class size mandate. Deputy Chancellor Emma Vadehra provides information on the current applications and estimates for teacher hiring.
- Schools have applied for well over 4,000 teachers
- This is in addition to the approximately 4,000 teachers hired each year, effectively doubling the number of new hires needed
- The DOE is reviewing all applications on a case-by-case basis
- If all requested teachers can be hired, it would put the DOE above compliance with the class size mandate, but not by a significant margin
- The total number of new teachers needed is estimated to be around 8,000 (4,000 regular hires plus 4,000 additional hires for class size reduction)

Do you have a number of how many teachers you're going to need to meet the mandate?
Emma Vadehra

It's a very good question.
4:10:06
What I will tell you is schools have applied for well over 4,000 teachers.
4:10:14
We are looking and that's obviously on top of the 4,000 ish we hire each year, so basically doubling the number we think we will need next year.
4:10:23
We are reviewing all of those applications case by case.
4:10:26
We would expect that if we can hire all of those teachers, it gets us above compliance, but not by a lot.
4:10:32
And so we do think the number is up in that direction.
