Council Member Marmorato inquires about the lack of a dedicated hazmat engine in the Bronx and how this issue can be addressed. Chief Esposito explains the current hazmat response setup and plans for improvement.
- The Bronx currently relies on squad companies and Hazmat Company 1 from Queens for hazmat response
- FDNY is proposing to designate Engine Company 67 as a hazmat technician unit for the Bronx
- Engine 67 is located in Manhattan but can quickly access the Bronx

I've been told that The Bronx is the only borough without a dedicated hazmat engine.
0:38:05
Why is that, and how can this be rectified?
0:38:08
And who currently responds to these type of natural disasters?
John Esposito

So thank you for that question.
0:38:14
So, yes, currently, right now, we have five engine companies spread throughout the city that are considered hazmat technician units.
0:38:22
In addition, we have eight squad companies, including two in The Bronx that are hazmat technician units.
0:38:30
So currently, those squad companies would perform the hazmat technician duties along with hazmat company one, which comes out of Queens and covers the whole city.
0:38:42
With that said, we are proposing that engine company sixty seven will be designated a hazmat technician unit, and they will they will be tasked with covering the entire Bronx so that each borough will have a hazmat technician engine dedicated to covering that borough.

Where is sixty seven located?
John Esposito

Sixty seven Engine is located in the Seventh Division, which is in Manhattan, but they're very quickly across the river into the Bronx, and they would be tasked with covering the Bronx.
