Council Member Ariola inquires about the handling of outdated apparatus in the FDNY fleet. Chief of Department Esposito explains the department's approach to managing older vehicles.

  • Outdated apparatus are still used for emergency responses but not for non-emergency activities like building or hydrant inspections.
  • All apparatus, including older ones, are inspected twice daily by firefighters and officers to ensure safety.
  • The department does not see a safety concern with using older apparatus for emergency responses.

Okay.
1:08:32
And so a lot of the fleet is outdated.
1:08:35
So what happens when an apparatus is outdated and it has to remain
Robert Tucker
1:08:41
in I think the cheapest posito to talk about our spare fleet and and etcetera.
1:08:47
And also for the inspections.
John Esposito
1:08:48
Sure.
1:08:50
So e even though some of our fleet is is outdated, we we don't see a safety concern with that.
1:08:57
Every apparatus that's in service is inspected by the firefighters and the officers twice a day.
1:09:03
So when an apparatus is outdated, they can only respond to emergencies.
1:09:12
So a report of a fire, report of a medical call, they would respond.
1:09:18
They are not able to use that apparatus for other things such as building inspection or hydrant inspection.
