Council Member Restler inquires about DOI's access to email servers of various city agencies. Commissioner Strauber explains the current situation and the process for accessing emails when direct access is not available.

  • DOI has direct access to all agencies whose email accounts are hosted by OTI (Office of Technology and Innovation).
  • Some agencies, including City Hall, are not hosted by OTI and require a separate request process for email access.
  • While the separate request process is more cumbersome, Strauber notes that they generally receive the cooperation they need when making such requests.

I just wanted to ask one more question about email access.
1:04:29
Could you understanding is that DOI has direct access to most agency servers to be able to review email correspondence from city agencies.
1:04:41
Could you let us know which city agencies DOI does not have direct access to?
Jocelyn E. Strauber
1:04:46
We have direct access to all agencies whose email accounts are hosted by OTI.
1:04:51
So that excludes, for example, you know, City Hall.
1:04:55
Their emails are not hosted there.
1:04:58
There are some other agencies as well.
1:05:00
I'd have to get you.
1:05:01
There are not very many, but there are some other agencies that are not OTI hosted who we also don't have direct access to.
1:05:08
For those, we have to go to those agencies with the request.
Lincoln Restler
1:05:11
That a cumbersome process?
Jocelyn E. Strauber
1:05:13
You know, I mean, it's a different process.
1:05:17
I would say that when we make these asks, are getting the cooperation that we need.
1:05:23
In an ideal world, would we have direct access without having to make the ask?
1:05:28
Yes, we would.
