Commissioner Aggarwala explains the factors affecting water quality and contamination risks, focusing on the impact of weather conditions and climate change.

  • Drought conditions contributed to improved water quality metrics
  • Climate change causing more violent storms, leading to increased organic material in reservoirs
  • Discussion of the potential threat to the Filtration Avoidance Determination (FAD) due to disinfection byproducts

Well, the main thing we did to be honest is we had a drought.

And so, you know, there is there is natural variability in this.

And as I mentioned earlier, one of the things we're paying close attention to as we think about the future of the fad is the way that the more violent storms that we are getting as a result of climate change has the tendency to flush organic material into our reservoirs, which we then treat with higher levels of chlorine, which then creates disinfection byproducts.

And that's one of the threats to the fad.

Just frankly, it's not so much that we did anything, it's that because there were so few rainstorms in f y twenty five to date that we just have the more the slower filtration, which is what you want to in the watershed as the water works its way through the soil, that's really good for water quality.

Fast runoff is really bad for water quality.
