Council Member Brooks-Powers inquires about the capacity and cost estimates for the borough-based jail facilities. DDC Associate Commissioner Jeffrey Margolis provides information on the planned capacity and estimated costs for each facility.

  • Each facility will have 1,040 beds in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, with 450 beds for women in Queens
  • The total cost estimate for all facilities is approximately $15 billion
  • Each borough's facility is estimated to cost about $3 billion, with Queens costing slightly more due to separate facilities for men and women

What is the current cost estimate for completion of each of these facilities?
Jeffrey Margolis
5:14:24
Sure, it's about $15,000,000,000 total, About three per borough and then 3 excuse me, $3,000,000,000 per borough and then Queens is a little more because as I mentioned the women are housed there.
5:14:36
So, we have to maintain separation between the men and the women.
5:14:39
So, it's almost like two jails in one.
5:14:41
So, you have to have separate facilities for the men and separate facilities for the women.

With the delays that we have as of today, what is now the the delta in terms of the cost for these jails from where it was projected at the onset?
Jeffrey Margolis
5:15:04
Sure.
5:15:04
So again some of these costs were identified well before DDC got involved, not that we're the the panacea about you know setting all costs but they really hadn't fleshed out exactly what the costs were when they were first announced many many years ago during the EULIR process.
5:15:21
But if I'm not mistaken I believe these projects are all fully funded and moving forward.
