New recreation center projects across New York City

The Parks Department is undertaking several major recreation center projects across New York City, representing significant investments in public health and community spaces.

  • Construction is underway on the $92 million Mary Kelly Dalton Recreation Center on Staten Island and the $41 million Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center in Brooklyn.
  • A new $90 million recreation center at Walter Gladwin Park in the Bronx received an award for excellence in design.
  • $160 million has been dedicated to rebuilding the Brownsville Recreation Center.
  • Plans are in place for a new multi-floor recreation center in Manhattan's Hudson Square neighborhood as part of a mixed-use development.

Last November, the design for a new $90,000,000 recreation center at Walter Gladwin Park in the Bronx was the recipient of an award for excellence in design from the Public Design Commission, and we're very excited to see that incredible project moving forward.

As part of the fiscal year '20 '20 '5 budget adopted last June, the administration also dedicated a hundred and $60,000,000 to completely rebuild the beloved Brownsville Recreation Center which had fallen into serious disrepair.

Just last month, we were proud to join our agency partners in announcing the administrative's creative and bold vision for transforming an underutilized site in Manhattan's Hudson Square neighborhood into a vibrant community focused mixed use development which will include a multi floor recreation center to provide year round recreation, health, and wellness opportunities for community members of all ages and abilities.

Beyond expanding recreation access to New Yorkers through brand new state of the art facilities, these projects represent hundreds of millions of dollars in major investments in public health and safety, providing safe and affordable spaces and strengthening community bonds.
