Council Member Rita C. Joseph inquires about parent satisfaction rates and addresses concerns regarding enrollment difficulties for low-income families in the Summer Rising program. DYCD officials explain the steps being taken to improve accessibility and support for families during the enrollment process.
- DYCD is working to increase access for families who may not have easy access to technology for online enrollment.
- Community-based organizations (CBOs), parent coordinators, and New York City Public Schools family welcome centers provide alternative ways for families to apply using the My Schools platform.
- The My Schools website offers translation capabilities to multiple languages to support families for whom English is not their first language.
- Family welcome support centers, parent coordinators, school leaders, and CBOs assist in navigating the system in various languages to help families enter information.

So what are the percentage of parents, if you have data, that are satisfied with the summarizing program?
1:51:49
A lot of our low income families have also expressed a lot of concern not being able to get their children enrolled.
1:51:55
We saw that a huge barrier.
1:51:57
What changes are you making to implement to increase parents who technology may not be at their fingertips to have access to enrolling their children and summarizing.
Susan Haskell

Actually am gonna call my colleague Dan Nguyen to talk about some of the supports we're giving for parents and some of the improvements that we've made to the enrollment system to help both families and CBOs do a better job.

Yeah.
Keith Howard

I do,
Daniel Guillen
1:52:44
yes.
1:52:45
Alright, good afternoon Chair Joseph.
1:52:48
As you know the recruitment process is not just a centralized process, it's work that happens on the ground.
1:52:55
So we're anticipating not just our CBOs who do amazing work in connecting those families who have technological issues, but also our parent coordinators and New York City Public Schools family welcome centers to ensure that there's alternative ways to making sure that they can apply using the My Schools.
Rita C. Joseph
1:53:10
And families that English is not their first language, how are you providing language access and support for those families as well?
Daniel Guillen
1:53:16
So, the website itself has the ability to translate to many different languages, not just necessarily to English.
1:53:23
So, with having the family welcome support center along with parent coordinators and school leaders and CBOs to be able to navigate that system through the languages that they need in order to enter the information.
