Council Member Rita C. Joseph inquires about the waitlist process for Summer Rising, particularly how long it takes for families to move off the waitlist. Assistant Commissioner Daniel Guillen explains the dynamic nature of the waitlist and selection process.

  • The waitlist becomes active immediately after initial selections are made.
  • Families may decline positions due to changed plans, allowing the list to move quickly.
  • The process of filling spots from the waitlist can start as early as the spring when notifications are sent out.
  • During the summer, the process becomes more localized, with school leadership and CBOs managing vacancies.
  • A new feature in the My Schools platform allows for filtering and navigation by grade levels, making the process more efficient.
  • The prioritization system aims to place the highest-need young people in available spots.

How long does it take someone to get off the waitlist once let's say you waitlist them and I may have family vacation planned and you put me on a waitlist, how long does that take to get off the waitlist so that family can plan around summarizing?

Well what's important here is that there is a phase between app selection and the start date in which a family may decline the position.
1:55:49
So that wait list is active the next day after selections are made.
1:55:53
So meaning a parent may not have gotten called the first day but maybe a week later, now the list starts to move because maybe I am gonna go on vacation now.
1:56:01
I applied early in March, but guess what, I'm gonna go to the islands for the summer.
1:56:05
So now a parent has the ability to decline, and now that next child, right, thinking about the prioritization to get the highest need young person there, can say now I'm a part of that program.
1:56:14
So a lot of the list can start moving even as early as the notifications happen in the spring.
1:56:20
So in the summer we know it's a very short window, but that happens a lot more locally which is much more true to what happens on the ground right.
1:56:27
School leaderships, CBOs are seeing who's showing up, they know their waitlist, they'll be able to filter and navigate and fill in gaps by the grade levels, which is a new feature within my schools as well, which makes that process move a lot faster.
