Council Member Restler and Deputy Commissioner Kerman discuss the impact of a $15 million budget cut on the city's ability to purchase electric vehicles. They analyze how this affects the city's progress towards its electrification goals.

  • Last fiscal year, about 400 electric vehicles were purchased
  • The $15 million cut represented 60% of the EV purchasing budget
  • Without the cut, an additional 350 electric vehicles could have been purchased
  • Discussion on how the budget cut puts the city behind schedule for meeting its 2038 mandate for a fully electric fleet

About 400 electric So
Lincoln Restler
1:22:48
our very back of the envelope, we're just sitting at a hearing talking math, we've got to do about 1,500 a year.
1:22:55
Last year we did 400, recognizing there are some gaps in the market that hopefully it's going to increase over time as electric vehicles become more widely adopted and utilized, we've got a ways to go.
1:23:05
Last year there was a $15,000,000 peg, if I recall correctly, to electric vehicle purchasing.
1:23:11
Is that right?
Keith Kerman
1:23:12
That's correct.
Lincoln Restler
1:23:12
How many additional electric vehicles would we have purchased if that $15,000,000 peg had not taken effect?
Keith Kerman
1:23:19
Well, 25,000,000 simple math.
1:23:21
25,000,000 bought you 600 electric vehicles on the expense budget.
1:23:25
10,000,000 buys you about two fifty.
1:23:28
So that's the gap.
1:23:29
It's about three fifty a year that you lose.
1:23:33
We are trying to move, like I mentioned earlier, we're trying to move the pickups and vans, which we've made a lot of progress on.
Lincoln Restler
1:23:39
But before we get into capital side.
1:23:41
I do and I want to get into that.
1:23:42
I just before we do, just to keep it simple for me and because, you know, I'm limited, we've got we need to do about 1,500 a year.
1:23:52
We did 400.
1:23:53
We would have been able to do an extra $3.50, but ONB cut $15,000,000 which was 60% of your EV purchasing last year.
1:24:02
So we would have been halfway to our goal, but now we're about a quarter of the way to our goal.
1:24:08
And that means we're nowhere close to being on pace to achieving the twenty thirteen man 02/1938 mandate.
1:24:14
We're way off.
1:24:15
Right?
1:24:16
I mean I just even if they hadn't cut the $15,000,000 last year from your EV purchasing, we were halfway to our goal.
1:24:24
Now we're a quarter of the way to our goal and you're doing the best you can and I'm glad you're meeting 6,000 this year, but 6,000 out of a 25,000 goal, it's we're just way far off.
1:24:34
So I just I continue to be just totally confused at why this cut took effect and how it aligns with our climate goals as a city and as and for what we're looking to accomplish with the fleet, what we're legally mandated to accomplish with the fleet.
