Board of Elections officials explain the process and challenges of removing deceased voters from the voter rolls. They discuss the information flow between various government departments and the timeframe for updates.

  • The process involves information passing from City Department of Health to State Department of Health to State Board of Elections to local jurisdictions
  • For deaths occurring within New York City, the turnaround time for removal is typically about three weeks
  • Challenges arise when people move out of state and die elsewhere
  • Officials can directly request confirmation from the Department of Health in specific cases
  • Council Member Brewer raises a specific case of a deceased individual still on the rolls, highlighting ongoing challenges in the process

Just when people die, how do you because, how do you determine that and get them off the rolls?
4:30:06
Because sometimes in New York City, there's nobody to tell you.
4:30:09
Right.
4:30:10
So a family.
Michael Ryan
4:30:10
Right.
4:30:11
The way the law works is the city, Department of Health forwards the information to the State Department of Health.
4:30:20
State Department of Health forwards the information to the State Board of Elections, and then the State Board of Elections, forwards the information to the jurisdictions that they think, the voter comes from.
4:30:33
And then we have to, process those debts off of the list that we receive from the state board of elections.
4:30:43
Now that having been said, I do my own little check on the system.
Gale A. Brewer
4:30:47
Doesn't always work.
Michael Ryan
4:30:48
Yeah.
4:30:48
It doesn't always work.
4:30:49
Somebody moves out of the state and they die elsewhere, we're always gonna have a problem.
4:30:53
But when I do my own check on the people that I know that, that happened to pass away and pass away in the in the jurisdiction, and I after about a month or so, I check.
4:31:04
I keep a note and I and I check.
4:31:06
And it's the turnaround time for the people that die in New York City, that live in New York City, is about three weeks.
Gale A. Brewer
4:31:13
Okay.
4:31:14
Take take Dwayne Player off the list.
4:31:16
He was one of my foster care kids.
4:31:18
Right.
4:31:18
I can't get him off.
4:31:19
I've written you several letters.
4:31:21
So he's dead.
4:31:22
Dwayne Player.
4:31:23
Thank you.
Michael Ryan
4:31:24
Alright.
4:31:25
Alright.
4:31:26
We can get more in situations like this when we if I can get more specific information, we have the ability to directly request confirmation Thank you.
4:31:37
From the Department of Health.
Gale A. Brewer
4:31:39
Alright.
4:31:39
Thank you.
