Commissioner Lojan discusses commercial organic waste separation and proposed legislation to expand requirements.
- Local Law 146 of 2013 requires certain commercial establishments to separate compostable material
- The law is now out of step with the city's commitment to diversion of compostable waste
- The commercial waste zone system will improve commercial diversion by requiring carters to charge less for recyclables and compost collection
- The City Council is considering a bill to allow DSNY to require source separation at all commercial establishments
- DSNY looks forward to working on this proposal to align commercial diversion with progress made in residential diversion
