Council Member Abreu inquires about DSNY's workforce analysis and recruitment challenges. Acting Commissioner Lojan discusses the department's recruitment and retention situation for both uniformed and civilian staff.

  • DSNY has not conducted a workforce analysis to compare full-time hiring costs with overtime expenses
  • Recruitment and retention for uniformed sanitation workers are generally successful
  • The department faces challenges in retaining mechanics, but is working with OMB to backfill positions

So I think on the uniform side recruiting has gone well.

Thankfully as I mentioned is my my testimony, sanitation workers do a great job, they're recognized for it.

On the civilian side, I think the only challenge we have is with our mechanics where some of them are starting to reach you know retirement age, but I think you know working with the administration OMB, they've thankfully allowed us to start to backfill some of those positions so it's getting a lot
