Commissioner Hendon and Council Member Paladino discuss the challenges of retaining veterans in New York City, particularly due to the high cost of living. They highlight the need to create pathways for veterans to live, learn, and work in the city.
- Approximately 5,000 out of 200,000 veterans are transitioning to New York City
- The main challenge is encouraging veterans to stay in the city after they arrive
- High cost of living in New York City is a significant factor pushing veterans to move to more affordable areas
- There's a need to create better pathways for veterans to establish themselves in the city long-term

The good thing about what we're doing is we know who they are inbound now, which is an upside.

And the it when it comes to the self idea, what I want to mention you demographically the trick is a lot of veterans are coming here.

That's a lot.
0:55:03
But are they staying?
0:55:05
So being that that's the thing.
0:55:06
So for us it's like live, learn, work in New York.
0:55:08
How do we make it so that you see a pathway?
0:55:10
A lot of them come here to learn, and they can get a job.
0:55:13
It's living here.
0:55:14
So that just to give the whole thing.

Vicious cycle of they can't afford to live here.
0:55:19
It's it's, you know, they'll go down to North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, or out West, Tennessee, wherever they can live for less and have a very good quality of life.
0:55:30
It's the same thing that's going on with regular civilians.
0:55:33
We're trying to keep regular folks here too, you know, that didn't, you know, people like you and me who are finding it harder and harder to stay in New York City.
0:55:41
So, alright.
0:55:42
I thank you for your time.
0:55:43
Mhmm.
0:55:43
Thank you very much.
