Council Member Sandy Nurse introduces Intro 1226, a bill aimed at improving code enforcement and making housing inspections more efficient in New York City. The legislation requires HPD to automatically schedule follow-up inspections and provide better communication with tenants about inspection times.
- The bill mandates HPD to immediately schedule a follow-up inspection when the original attempt is unsuccessful
- It requires HPD to notify tenants in writing, text, or email about inspection dates and times
- The legislation aims to reduce the burden on tenants for rescheduling missed inspections

Today, I'm introducing intro twelve twenty six, which will improve code enforcement, make housing inspections more efficient, and codify agency practice.

Currently, law requires HPD to schedule inspections for certain violations but not others.
1:05:06
They are also not required to reschedule missed inspections, and that really puts the burden on the tenant to file more three one one complaints or call HPD to reschedule.
1:05:17
But we can and should make things easier for tenants living in bad conditions.
1:05:22
This bill will require HPD to immediately schedule a follow-up inspection when the original inspection attempt was unsuccessful.
1:05:28
It would also require HPD to let the tenant know the date and time of the follow-up inspection in writing and text or email, as well as send the tenant same day updates via text or email on the inspector's estimated time of arrival.

It shouldn't be easier to track or pick up a missed package than it is to fix something in your apartment.

I do wanna acknowledge that this bill idea came from my director of constituent services, Vannette Soriano Harrow, who inspired the creation of it through her tireless work with District 37 constituents experiencing delayed inspections.

And with that, I encourage my colleagues to sign on to this bill.
