Council Member Ayala and Scott French from HRA discuss the potential impacts of SNAP funding cuts and the city's advocacy efforts to protect SNAP benefits for New Yorkers. French outlines the estimated impacts and the city's concerns.

  • Estimated $230 billion in potential cuts to SNAP over the next ten years
  • New York City residents could lose about $870 million in annual SNAP funding
  • For a family of three, this could mean about $130 less each month in benefits
  • The city is engaging in advocacy at the federal level to highlight the human impact of these cuts

If SNAP were to be cut or eliminated, has HRA estimated a potential impact on city residents and what advocacy is the city undertaking to help protect SNAP benefits for New Yorkers?
Scott French
1:42:48
Certainly.
1:42:48
So, yes, we're extremely concerned about the farm bill and potential cuts.
1:42:53
As I've mentioned before, right, we've estimated that there could be up to 230,000,000,000 in cuts to SNAP over the next ten years.
1:43:01
We estimated that that would result into potentially 870,000,000 in annual funding in SNAP that New York City and more importantly New York City residents would lose from their benefits.
1:43:14
That would, for a family of three, result in about a hundred and $30 less each month, you know, about $1,560 over a year, which are very real dollars, you know.
1:43:26
And cuts of that magnitude, right, is not something the city or the state will be able to step in and, you know, fill the gap on that.
1:43:36
So we're very concerned.
1:43:38
We are doing an immense amount of advocacy at the federal level, you know, around, you know, these and trying to really highlight the human impact of these types of cuts that they're not numbers, they're people.
1:43:50
And so we encourage and welcome the the council's partnership, but we are concerned because, you know, the the estimates we've done are, you know, very real and very significant.
Diana Ayala
1:44:02
I mean
Scott French
1:44:03
Along with a variety of other benefits potentially as well.
