Council Member Amanda Farías asks about the top line issues facing the Hunts Point Market and requests for alleviating those concerns. Matthew D'Arrigo, an owner at the market, responds by highlighting the main challenges and potential solutions.

  • Lack of adequate storage capacity is the primary issue, currently addressed through the use of TRUs (Transport Refrigeration Units)
  • The market's age (58 years old) necessitates a dramatic redevelopment
  • Inefficient refrigeration systems could be improved for better energy efficiency and lower overhead costs

Can you give us the top line issues facing the markets today and any primary requests around alleviating some of those concerns or top line issues?
Matthew D'Arrigo
1:34:39
Well, top line has always been that our market has not had adequate capacity to hold the inventory that it the industry demands we take it on.
1:34:53
And we we don't turn down product because it really offers a downward, pricey, situation, which, you know, gives better, better options and opportunities for the consumer.
1:35:11
So to me, number one, lack of capacity, for storage.
1:35:17
We've made up for that in large measure by the TRU's.
1:35:21
Nobody likes those, including us.
1:35:23
It puts a whole another level of handling and cost into our business.
1:35:28
Instead of take it off, bring it in, and then load it back out, we take it off, put it on a cold storage van, take it back on, put it in the warehouse.
1:35:35
So you're moving things around unnecessarily.
1:35:38
It would be wonderful to have a market where that does not happen and the new rebuild would accomplish that.
1:35:44
As far as other top line issues, the market's 58.
1:35:51
It's a noble beast, but it's it's time for a a dramatic redevelopment.
1:35:58
I think our refrigeration is inefficient.
1:36:00
I think there's ways to have much better efficiency and energy savings for the market and and, you know, lower our overhead.
1:36:11
But it's it's a fairly simple place, the market.
1:36:14
So, you know, our our top line needs are are pretty pretty much right in front, and I've just told you what those are.
