Estimated cost of upgrading DSNY fleet for citywide containerization

Acting Commissioner Javier Lojan and Deputy Commissioner Joseph Antonelli discuss the challenges in estimating the cost of upgrading the entire DSNY fleet for citywide containerization.

  • The cost for a single side-loading truck compatible with Empire bins is $621,000.
  • The total fleet upgrade cost depends on factors such as the number of buildings that opt into the program and the results of the pilot program.
  • DSNY needs to assess the capacity and efficiency of the new trucks in real-world conditions before making accurate estimates for citywide implementation.

Thank you sir.

If the program expands citywide, what is the estimated cost of upgrading the entire DSNY fleet to include mechanical trucks compatible with Empire bins?
Javier Lojan
0:41:38
So I think that's something we have to continue to do an analysis on.
0:41:45
The cost for the side loading truck is $621,000.

Per truck?

Per

truck.
0:41:53
I think once we if once we get legislation passed and we know we're going citywide, I think we'll have a better sense of the need because remember part of the legislation has the 10 to 30 unit universe of buildings.
Shaun Abreu
0:42:08
Which is based on opt in, right?
Javier Lojan
0:42:10
So the more buildings opt in the more the truck need goes up.
0:42:12
So I think it's contingent on that.
Shaun Abreu
0:42:13
Obviously we can't predict how many property owners from 10 to 30 units will be able to opt in but assuming that there were legislation that would go into effect that would provide for on street containers for 31 units or more, what would be the number of sanitation trucks that would be needed to service those areas?
Javier Lojan
0:42:40
I'll pass it to DCF Tenali.
Joseph Antonelli
0:42:42
So the reason why we don't have that estimate right now is we need to see the results of the pilot from really from a capacity of the truck standpoint.
0:42:53
So right now obviously our 25 cubic yard trucks we know exactly how much we can pack in it, how many tons and everything.
0:42:59
This truck is an entirely new truck to us.
0:43:01
It's a body being imported from Italy.
0:43:04
We have what the manufacturer says that the capacity should be.
0:43:07
We've done our own compaction testing to kind of come up with estimates how we can do the routing in M9.
0:43:12
But until we have it on the street and we actually start packing these trucks out on a daily basis, we really won't understand how they compare to our current trucks and whether or not it would just be a one for one replacement or if there is actually an additional truck need.
