Council Member Banks inquires about the potential benefits of local hiring for NYCHA positions. Manny Martinez explains the positive impact this could have and criticizes current NYCHA policies that prevent residents from working in their own developments.

  • Martinez argues that local hiring would make a significant difference as residents care about their communities
  • He criticizes NYCHA's policy of not allowing employees to work in the developments where they live
  • This policy is seen as a sign of mistrust towards residents and a failure in community engagement

When it comes to local hiring as well, do you think that that's something that they should engage the residents on?

I mean, I know that's a section three requirement.

And and would it make a difference if local residents were also in these positions?
0:11:11
It would make a huge difference because you have local residents who care about their communities.
0:11:16
Currently, NYCHA has a policy in which they don't allow their own NYCHA employees who live in NYCHA work in the developments they're at, and we think that that's a huge failure.
0:11:26
That that signifies a gross mistrust of the residents that they're supposed to serve and who works for them instead of them upholding compliance and securing that people are doing their jobs.
