The city is committed to constructing state-of-the-art, borough-based jail facilities that prioritize safety, modernity, and proximity to families and communities. The Department of Design and Construction is using design-build strategies to maximize efficiency and save time.

This this commitment to closing Rikers' success depends on the construction of state of the art jail facilities that supports the safety and well-being of the people in custody.

But that's everybody, correctional health staff, correction officers, and DOC staff, who will be the ones that experience the facility every day with the individuals that are also in custody.

As the Littman Commission report acknowledged, DDC utilization of design build strategies is maximizing efficiency and saving time.

By allowing for site prep and foundation work prior to design completion, This means that the design build teams meet daily with their partners across the city to find new efficiencies and to tackle challenges that arise and later this spring they will issue a notice to proceed for the creation of the fourth and final new jail.

We know construction is a disruption and, you know, our neighbors, I'm a neighbor, I live in Brooklyn, so I know what that disruption really feels like with that borough based jail, but we're all working to balance speed, safety, adverse impacts on the neighborhoods, and our fiscal responsibility to taxpayers.
