Council Member Tiffany Cabán questions Deanna Logan from the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice about the number of transitional housing units and the waitlist for such housing. Logan reveals there are 1,000 beds in the system but struggles to provide specific waitlist numbers.

  • MOCJ has 1,000 transitional housing beds currently in operation
  • There is no centralized waitlist, but various stakeholders (DAs, defense counsel) report people waiting for beds
  • Logan acknowledges there is a need for housing but cannot provide specific numbers on the waitlist
Tiffany Cabán

Thank you.
2:19:56
I'm gonna focus this round of questioning also for mock Jay.
2:20:01
I I wanna hone in a bit on you guys named that closing Rikers comes down to to three commitments.
2:20:08
Two two of them being eliminating unnecessary incarceration and supporting reentry strategies to end recidivism.
2:20:15
And you've also named in your testimony that the data supports that meeting housing needs reduces crime and recidivism.
2:20:24
And we also heard from the last panel that it takes over 400,000 to incarcerate an individual for a year versus the 55 for a year support in supportive housing just as like a base or a framework.
2:20:37
And I want to know more about what we're pouring into those commitments.
2:20:40
Sort of what is the scope of the support based and in relationship to the need.
2:20:46
And I'd like to know how many units of transitional housing are currently operated by mock j contracted providers.
2:20:53
And then also how many people are currently on waiting list for the mock j funded transitional houses housing?
2:20:59
And then one more, I'll add more afterwards.
2:21:02
How many of those people are currently at Rikers?
Deanna Logan
2:21:07
Okay, council member.
2:21:09
I I apologize, but that was a lot of questions around
Tiffany Cabán
2:21:12
How many units are currently evaporated being
Deanna Logan
2:21:14
the first So we have 1,000 beds in the system.
Tiffany Cabán
2:21:18
Okay, and how many people are on waitlists for transitional housing, for the mock J funded transitional housing?
Deanna Logan
2:21:27
In terms of waitlists, there are multiple waitlists because when we're talking about partners you have I know that there's
Tiffany Cabán
2:21:34
overlap, but what's the waitlist currently for?
Deanna Logan
2:21:37
So in terms of our partners, I don't know that they have a waitlist.
2:21:43
They get the referrals, and as soon as the beds open up, they say, I have a bed.
2:21:48
And so the waitlist that we know are the DAs will say, We have people that are waiting to get a bed.
2:21:55
Defense counsel will say, we have people that are waiting to get a bed.
2:21:58
So we know that there is need.
