Council Member Sandy Nurse asks what the council needs to do to help site housing and facilities, and Stanley Richards emphasizes the need for council support in community-based projects.

  • Richards stresses the importance of every community bearing its fair share in providing opportunities for vulnerable New Yorkers
  • He highlights the Just Homes project as an example of permanent supportive housing for people with complex needs
  • Richards calls for the city council to 'lean in' by voting for these projects and providing necessary resources

are very experienced and excellent on this, but and I do know I'm gonna get to the public advocate, did want to give a statement, I think council member Hudson did as well, so I'll get you in there, but we're kind of on a roll now.
0:27:26
So some of most of your recommendations are looking at us, like I mean part of it is like you're looking at council members, borough presidents, community boards, you're asking us to help site housing and facilities, what what are you needing from us?
0:27:41
You know make your pitch to what you need from those of us who have decision makers decision making power over where infrastructure that can support us closing Rikers needs
Jonathan Lippman
0:27:54
to Zach, you want to give a short list?
0:27:57
Sam, go ahead.
Stanley Richards
0:27:58
We need the city council to lean in.
0:28:01
I think we're at a moment where every community must bear its fair share of providing opportunity, stability, and housing to some of the most vulnerable New Yorkers.
0:28:12
We have a project that is in the pipeline called Just Homes that is targeting people with complex medical needs who are homeless, who cycle between Rikers Island, the emergency room and hospitalization and shelter.
0:28:27
And those are some of the most expensive resources that the city leverages to care for them.
0:28:32
And what we're offering is permanent supportive housing in The Bronx on Jacobi Hospital Campus.
0:28:38
This one example of what we need from the city council is for the city council to truly lean into that and to ensure that every community bears its fair share.
0:28:47
And I am from The Bronx.
0:28:48
I'm from community board seven, and we have multiple developments that have been happening in our community, and I applaud those in in, developments.
0:28:57
We have the Doe Fund in my community.
0:28:59
I was born at Jacobi Hospital.
0:29:01
So there's an investment we need from the city council, both in terms of their ability, your ability to vote yes for those projects, and your ability to lean in with resources to make sure that those projects go through.
