Council Member Sandy Nurse inquires about the staffing plans for the Bellevue facility. Alexandria Maldonado from DOC explains that they are reevaluating their initial analysis of over 200 staff members based on feedback from the state. The staffing plan is driven by facility design and the need to meet state and local regulations.

  • Initial staffing estimate was over 200, now being reevaluated
  • Staffing plan is influenced by facility design and regulatory requirements
  • DOC is working to maximize staffing efficiencies due to overall staffing concerns

When do you all think you'll get through all those items so that they can grant you permission?
Alexandria Maldonado
2:42:47
We're working again with CHS and H and H to develop an active punch list that incorporates everything and feedback from the SCOC as well as some of the security items that we're concerned about to make sure that again this is a safe and secure facility.
2:43:02
So we're actively working.
2:43:04
We actually have a site meeting tomorrow afternoon to really hone in on how we can operationalize this.
Sandy Nurse
2:43:11
Okay.
2:43:11
How many uniform staff do you expect to be assigned there?
Alexandria Maldonado
2:43:15
So our initial analysis had well over 200 staff members that we would need, but based on feedback from the state, we are reevaluating that analysis.
2:43:26
And again staffing is a huge concern for the department.
2:43:29
We've testified on that before.
2:43:31
So what I would say is that we're really trying to maximize staffing efficiencies.
2:43:35
So I don't have a number for you at this moment, but it's something that we are working towards because this is a priority for
Jennifer Parish
2:43:42
us.
Sandy Nurse
2:43:42
I think you all had testified before around 300 people which we also thought was kind of a lot excessive given that we know you have another facility that has less than that that's comparable.
2:43:56
So we'd really love to see or if you could provide and follow-up any detail of your staffing plan that you already have sketched out given that we've talked about this quite a while like I can't imagine there's nothing on paper or if you have something on paper written down we'd love to have that in the follow-up this week.
Alexandria Maldonado
2:44:16
Absolutely one thing I will share you know the staffing is really is largely driven by the design and the fact that this is a jail facility that has to have meet all standards by the state and local regulations.
2:44:29
So you know again we're mandated obviously to provide minimum standards, but we try to exceed those where we can.
2:44:35
And so staffing is really driven by that as well as the nature of the need for active supervision.
Sandy Nurse
2:44:41
Do not have a site plan?
Alexandria Maldonado
2:44:43
I'm not sure what you mean, ma'am.
Sandy Nurse
2:44:44
Well you're saying that your staffing plan is driven by what the facility needs to look like.
2:44:48
So do you have most of that?
Alexandria Maldonado
2:44:51
Well that's why we had an estimate that was close to 300, right?
2:44:54
I was thinking about that site plan because we're always on-site.
2:44:57
In fact I was there yesterday Okay.
2:44:59
To make sure that we can properly supervise the individuals in
Althea V. Stevens
2:45:04
care.
2:45:05
Okay.
