Deanna Logan from the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice discusses the current efforts and commitments to reduce the jail population, including weekly meetings and various strategies being explored.

  • Agencies meet weekly in an initiative labeled 'every jail bed counts'
  • They explore various avenues to reduce jail population, including 6A, CRC, and case processing
  • The approach includes both macro-level policy changes and micro-level case reviews
  • They work with stakeholders, including the Defense Bar, to expedite case dispositions
  • Efforts are made to advance cases that are ready for non-incarceratory dispositions

Okay, when the council met with Mokje and then deputy mayors Joshi and Parker in February, you all agreed to send us a list of new commitments to reduce the jail population.
2:30:37
But besides sort of what's updated here, has there been any movement on this and is there anything you'd like to share with us today on that?
Deanna Logan

Currently we are meeting weekly as the agencies in what we have labeled every jail bed counts and that specifically looks at every single avenue of reducing jail population from six a, CRC, case processing, all of the various avenues that are within city control at the moment are being explored in order to ensure that we can work with the stakeholders to have individuals cases reviewed so that both defense and prosecutors can agree on dispositions that are non incarceratory dispositions.
2:31:28
We regularly talk with stakeholders.

Teens at Mach J talk to Defense Bar who have raised that there are cases that they highlight for us where they are ready for disposition so that we can go back and work with our partners at OCA and have those cases advanced so that individuals cases can be moving through the system much more expeditiously.
2:31:48
We're working in a macro level of what are the policy changes that we can make in order to reduce population, and we're working in the micro level as to is there an individual here whose case is ready that we know that the partners have talked, but the date is set for two months out.
2:32:05
Hi OCA, let's highlight this one for you.
2:32:07
Please advance this case.

And so you all are doing that on a weekly basis with And then as you're kind of assessing and exploring what actions you assessing and exploring what actions you want to take, do you expect to have like a roadmap, an action plan that you all will agree upon and be able to produce?
