Deanna Logan from the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice shares the preliminary findings of the supervised release intensive case management pilot program. The discussion focuses on the optimal caseload for clinicians working with high-need individuals.

  • The pilot experimented with different caseload sizes for clinicians
  • A caseload of 11-15 individuals per clinician was found to be most effective
  • Higher caseloads (16+) resulted in individuals not receiving necessary dedicated services
  • The program aims to better manage populations that have been cycling through the system and recidivating at higher rates

One of the recommendations is to expand this to about 46,000,000.

Can you tell us what are the tell us about some of the preliminary results of the treatment study group, what can you tell us about the findings of this pilot so far?
Deanna Logan
2:28:27
During the pilot we experimented with the number of individuals that could be serviced by different clinicians.
2:28:35
Specifically, we looked at clinicians who had experience and the education to deal with individuals of high needs.
2:28:43
We started out with a caseload of 11 individuals, and we slowly started to move the caseload up.
2:28:51
As we moved the caseload up for each one of the clinicians, reaching a point of 16 individuals per case manager, we realized that individuals were not getting the necessary dedicated services, and we started to lose individuals.

So what we know is that providing a very dedicated resourced case manager who is significantly experienced with dealing with high risk populations at a level of somewhere between eleven and fifteen is the way that we are much more successful in managing populations of individuals that had heretofore been cycling in the system, and recidivating at higher rates than their counterparts.
