Zachary Katznelson provides details on current and projected staffing numbers for the Department of Correction (DOC) and the new borough-based jail system. He explains the rationale behind the proposed staffing levels and how they compare to current numbers.
- Current DOC staffing is just under 6,000 officers, with a budget for over 7,000
- Projected staffing for new system: 3,250 officers and 1,500 civilian staff
- New staffing ratio: 75 officers per 100 incarcerated individuals
- Projected jail population of 4,500 people in the new system

The staffing now is just under they're just under 6,000 officers on payroll on payroll.
0:38:34
They are budgeted.
0:38:35
The budgeted amount is just over 7,000 officers.
0:38:38
We are looking at roughly 3,250 officers would be necessary.
0:38:45
We're looking at a population of roughly 4,500 people.
0:38:49
Right?
0:38:49
That's the maximum capacity of the borough system.
0:38:51
We're proposing adding 500 psychiatric beds outside the jails.
0:38:56
But we're looking at a population of roughly 4,500 people in the system.
0:39:00
That requires it's basically a ratio of 75 officers for every 100 incarcerated people.
0:39:06
That would still be vastly tremendously richly staffed compared to incarceration systems around the country.
0:39:13
We also foresee having roughly 1,500, if not slightly more, civilian staff there people who are providing services, people who providing support, social workers, counselors, people that can do the work, some of which is done now by uniformed officers but doesn't need to be.

Right?

This balance of security and services that you look at that all together, it gets us to a savings of over $2,000,000,000 a year, every year once the system is in place.
