Council Member Mercedes Narcisse presents her sponsored bill, Intro 340, which aims to waive late penalties for parking violations if individuals respond within 45-90 days. She emphasizes that this legislation addresses the financial hardship caused by accumulating late fees on parking tickets, particularly for working families.

  • The bill proposes to waive additional fees of up to $60 on top of the base fine for those who respond within the specified timeframe.
  • Narcisse argues that the bill provides a more reasonable timeline for addressing parking violations without excusing responsibility.
  • She seeks feedback on how to best help middle-class working families in New York City with this issue.

The additional fees we can add up to $60 on top of the base fine are undue burden on working families who are already stretched thin.

It is a practical approach that helps people who are doing their best to stay afloat and simply need a little more time to resolve their fines.

This bill doesn't excuse responsibility for parking violations, it simply gives New Yorkers a fairer more reasonable timeline to address their problem without the fear of financial ruin.
