Council Member Brooks-Powers inquires about DOT's plans to implement Local Law 66 of 2023, which requires daylighting at a minimum of 100 intersections per year starting January 1, 2025. Deputy Commissioner Beaton outlines DOT's progress and commitment.
- DOT implemented daylighting at over 1,000 intersections last year, including 300 with hardening
- The department is committed to surpassing the requirements of the legislation
- DOT has a unit that tracks implementation to ensure it's on track and equitably distributed across the city

Daylighting is focused on removing visual obstructions closest to intersections, mainly curb parking spaces in the hopes of increasing visibility for pedestrians and drivers to make our intersections safer for everyone.

The city council, again, passed local law 66 of 2023 requiring that DOT implement daylighting at a minimum of a hundred intersections a year beginning on 01/01/2025.

What work is DOT undergoing to ensure this requirement is met?
Eric Beaton

Yes, so last year we implemented over daylighting at over a thousand intersections including about 300 where we included the hardening.

So I think we are very committed to not just meeting but surpassing the requirements of that legislation.

And we have a unit that tracks all of this so that we are able to make sure we are on track and doing it equitably around the city.
