Ben Tweedy, a Brooklyn resident, strongly supports Intro 1138 for proactively improving street safety. He criticizes the DOT's focus on historically dangerous locations and highlights current street safety issues, emphasizing the need for change to protect pedestrians, especially children.

  • Tweedy expresses concern about increased mobility of toddlers on three-wheel scooters and the dangers they face.
  • He points out issues such as ignored stop signs, crosswalks used as loading zones, and visibility problems caused by large vehicles.
  • Tweedy concludes by stating that many attendees simply want to "die of natural causes" and thanks the council for considering Intro 1138.

My name is Ben Tweedy and I'm a resident of Brooklyn.
3:18:06
I want to thank the council for doing something that feels rare in street safety, being proactive in reducing risk for pedestrian and drivers alike with Intro eleven thirty eight.
3:18:18
And I'm appalled by the DOT's interest in focusing on historically dangerous locations because that is retroactive, and the data that they are looking for is human life and injury.
3:18:30
I've noticed that three wheel scooters seem to be a rite of passage for toddlers in my neighborhood.
3:18:37
It's giving them unprecedented speed and mobility.
3:18:41
And although this demographic also excels at peekaboo, the game needs to stop.
3:18:47
This is a world where stop signs feel that they are optional and unenforced.
3:18:52
Crosswalks have been converted into loading zones for Amazon, UPS and FedEx.
3:18:58
Uber drivers are constantly checking their maps and pedestrians can't see around souped up Toyota Tundras that are overlapping with the crosswalk.
3:19:07
I think that a lot of us are here because we just want to die of natural causes.
3:19:12
And we thank you for passing 11:38 and keeping that dream alive.
