Kathy Park Price, a Brooklyn parent and organizer for Transportation Alternatives, strongly supports Intro 1138 for universal daylighting to improve safety at intersections. She emphasizes the importance of clear sight lines in preventing accidents, especially for children navigating city streets.

  • Motor vehicle-related injuries are the leading cause of injury-related death for children aged 1-12 in New York City.
  • Universal daylighting is described as a low-cost, effective, and urgent solution to improve visibility for drivers and pedestrians.
  • Park Price urges the passage of Intro 1138, stating it would show that "New York City chooses kids over cars."

Good afternoon.
2:32:22
My name is Kathy Park Price.
2:32:24
I'm a Brooklyn parent of two kids ages 13 and 11 who like most middle schoolers in New York City navigate the streets on their own.
2:32:34
They walk to school, to the library, to the park, to friends homes, and they cross intersections where the majority of crashes occur every day, every day.
2:32:46
And as a mom, I carry the constant fear that a driver won't see them in time.
2:32:52
I'm here in strong support of Intro eleven thirty eight which would require universal daylighting and ensure that cars no longer park in daylit zones.
2:33:01
Daylighting is a simple and proven design treatment that helps New York City kids and all of us safe at crosswalks.
2:33:11
As the Brooklyn Organizer for transportation alternatives, I work with families across the borough who are tired of dangerous intersections being treated as inevitable.
2:33:21
We know what works, clear sight lines save lives.
2:33:25
In New York City, Motor Vehicle Related Injuries are the leading cause of injury related death among children's one to twelve.
2:33:34
That means walking, something we want our kids to feel safe doing is the most dangerous thing they do every day.
2:33:42
And let's be clear, looking both ways doesn't help when you're already walking with the light in the crosswalk and a turning driver doesn't see you.
2:33:50
Universal daylighting is a low cost is low cost, effective, and urgent.
2:33:56
It gives drivers a better view and gives pedestrians, especially children, a fighting chance.
2:34:03
Let's not wait for another preventable tragedy.
2:34:06
Let's show that New York City chooses kids over cars.
2:34:09
Please pass intro 11:38.
