In Queens, as council member Juan has set forth, we are unfortunately and terrifyingly all too familiar with the danger cars pose to pedestrians, especially children.
4:10:05
We have lost children walking home from school or the playground while crossing at crosswalks with the right of way because drivers did not see them.
4:10:15
As a driver, I know all too well how difficult it is to see who is at the crosswalk when cars are parked near an intersection, and it is especially hard to see children.
4:10:27
As a mother, I tell my son to always make sure you make eye contact with drivers when crossing the street, but how can he do that if the drivers can't even see him and he can't see the cars?
4:10:39
As others have testified, universal hardened daylighting is a relatively simple and low cost step we can take to improve pedestrian safety and save lives.
4:10:48
Moreover, hardened daylighting provides an opportunity to add green space, absorb flooding, and install structures that will help pedestrians such as bus shelters.
4:10:58
I've heard the arguments against daylighting today, but I remain unconvinced because common sense and my own experience as both a driver and pedestrian tell me that seeing who is at the crosswalk is the first step to not hitting whoever is at the crosswalk.
4:11:16
Yes, we will lose parking spots, but I'd rather lose parking spots in another
