Zeke Dunn, a volunteer for Kids Over Cars and father of a four-year-old, testifies in support of daylighting in NYC. He shares personal experiences of the dangers posed by limited visibility at intersections due to parked cars and emphasizes the importance of implementing daylighting measures for the safety of children and all pedestrians.

  • Highlights the contrast between his son's careful behavior and the reckless driving he often observes in his neighborhood
  • Points out that NYC's exemption from state daylighting law creates dangerous situations where neither pedestrians nor drivers can see clearly at intersections
  • Advocates for comprehensive daylighting measures, including hardened daylighting at over a thousand intersections annually, as a duty to future generations of New Yorkers

Hi.
2:56:16
My name is Zeke Dunn.
2:56:17
I volunteer for Kids Over Cars.
2:56:19
I am the father of a four year old living in Sunnyside, Queens.
2:56:24
And you gotta meet Emile.
2:56:26
He is obsessed with race cars.
2:56:29
He's obsessed with speed.
2:56:31
He thirsts for velocity.
2:56:33
And, you know, I can admit that cars can be cool and going fast is fun.
2:56:39
But even Emile knows to stop and look when he gets to the intersection.
2:56:44
Unfortunately, not all drivers are as careful as Emile is.
2:56:47
I can't tell you the number of times I've seen cars and SUVs cruise quickly through stop signs and red lights in my neighborhood as we walk to the playground or to school.
2:56:56
And because NYC exempts itself from state daylighting law, my son and I can't see clearly down the street as we approach the crosswalk.
2:57:04
At the same time, even the responsible drivers can't see us when cars are parked right up against the crosswalk.
2:57:11
Even if me and the driver and my son are as careful as we can be, we can't see what we can't see.
2:57:19
Daylighting, including hardened daylighting at more than a thousand intersections a year, nothing less than our duty to all the future generations of little New Yorkers who deserve to grow up healthy and so, so fast.
2:57:31
Thank you so much.
