Council Member Krishnan inquires about the balance between athletic fields reserved for permitted activities and those available for open public use. The Parks Department representative explains their approach to managing field availability.
- All fields in the Parks system are available for permitting
- New rules aim to reduce unused permitted time, making more fields available for community use
- The Parks website and system show when fields are free for public use
- Smaller spaces in parks that aren't formal athletic fields are available through the special events permitting process

Got it.
1:05:14
Okay.
1:05:15
And what's the number of athletic fields that are typically reserved or capable of being reserved for permitted activity compared to the fields that are available for open and non permitted uses for the general public?
1:05:27
And how do you all determine what fields will be for open use and what fields are for permitted activities?
Margaret Nelson
1:05:33
Sure.
1:05:33
So all of the fields in our system are available for permitting.
1:05:42
So there's not any amount of fields that are kind of put aside and not permitted that are in our system that are available to be permitted.
1:05:51
That said, I think with new rules, the idea is we were seeing before a lot of times we go out and fields were unused, right?
1:06:03
But in the system it was showing that somebody had that permit.
1:06:06
In our new system, if we can reduce that kind of time that folks are taking that is not getting used so that they're, having fewer permits, that will show up on our website and show up at our system as available so that more time for the community, they'll see that that field is free and they can go play on that field.
1:06:27
So that's how we balance the permitted time versus the community time.

That was my

next question.
1:06:33
Sorry.
1:06:33
There's plenty of, you know, spaces in our parks or smaller fields that aren't permitted fields that are available through the special events.
