Council Member Krishnan inquires about the process for determining permit allocation when multiple groups apply for the same space and time. The Parks Department representative explains the priority order used in such situations.

  • Priority order: NYC parks programming and youth leagues (including school leagues), returning customers (including adult leagues), those applying within the optimal season request period, and then all other requests
  • Consideration is given to in-season sports for specific fields
  • Returning customers with a history of successful permit applications receive preference

What about if multiple groups apply for permits for the same space at the same time?
1:02:12
How does parks determine who should ultimately receive the permits?
Margaret Nelson
1:02:16
So, you know, in our rules, we have priority order.
1:02:20
So our youth first of all, let me let me see if I can get to it.
1:02:24
So, New York City parks programming, youth leagues and school leagues take priority.
1:02:32
After that, returning customers, which includes adult leagues, and then those applying within the optimal season request period.
1:02:41
And then after that so there's an in season and out season, right?
1:02:46
So if you're applying for a field that the in season is soccer but you want to play a different sport, you have to wait to to the kind of other people who are asking for the in sport season are accommodated.
1:02:57
And then if it's still available, we would issue that permit.
1:02:59
So that's kind of the ranking order.
Shekar Krishnan
1:03:01
Got it.
1:03:01
Okay.
1:03:02
And can you clarify again?
1:03:02
What was the ranking for, priority?
Margaret Nelson
1:03:05
New York City Parks programming and youth leagues, which includes official school leagues, then returning customers, which includes adult leagues, then those applying within the optimal season request that may be new, and then all other field and court requests.
Shekar Krishnan
1:03:22
I see.
1:03:22
So included in there too are, you know, separating apart from youth and others is if there are groups, individuals who have a history of successfully applying for permits and getting them, they are part of the preference when they're applying for a new seasonal permit.
Margaret Nelson
1:03:38
Yes.
Shekar Krishnan
1:03:38
Right.
