Council Member Julie Menin questions DOT officials about the low number of fully approved outdoor dining applications. First Deputy Commissioner Margaret Forgione explains that while only 67 businesses have full approval, 80% of applicants can now operate.

  • DOT received 3,922 total applications from about 3,200 food service establishments
  • Applications are split between roadway, sidewalk, and combined setups
  • 511 applications were withdrawn or denied due to conflicts with bus stops or fire hydrants

So a number of questions.
1:35:44
I mean, first of all, I I really wanna drill down on this number of the 67 businesses with full approval because the goal of the hearing is obviously to try to fix this backlog and figure out what can we do to improve this.
1:35:59
Why is it that only 67 businesses have received this full approval?
Margaret Forgione
1:36:05
Okay.
1:36:06
I'll start out by going through some of the numbers, and then Michelle will add if I've I've missed anything.
1:36:10
First and foremost, we wanna emphasize that 80% of the program's applicants are now able to be up and running as of April 1.
1:36:19
So the bottom line is that 80% of restaurants can operate as we speak.
1:36:23
So that for us is the most key factor here.
1:36:26
We wanna get every restaurant operational as soon as possible
