Council Member Brewer raises concerns about street cleaning and maintenance around outdoor dining structures. DOT officials explain the responsibilities of restaurants and city agencies in keeping these areas clean and accessible for maintenance.

  • Restaurants are required to clean all around their outdoor dining setup
  • Sanitation Department monitors cleanliness and can issue violations or inform DOT of issues
  • Outdoor dining structures have removable floors for easy cleaning
  • Setups are designed to be removable to allow for street paving and other maintenance

The other question I have is just in terms of the you heard earlier about the street cleaning.
2:08:50
Obviously, that was a concern before.
2:08:52
So how would, you know, road paving or other issues, how are we gonna make sure that there is cleanliness?
2:08:59
Obviously, the ones who were here earlier in terms of the restaurants, they keep it clean.
2:09:03
But how are you working with sanitation on that issue?
2:09:06
We understand there won't be the underneath for the rats.
2:09:08
I got that.
2:09:09
But, you know, other things.
2:09:10
How are we going to work on that?
Margaret Forgione
2:09:12
Okay.
2:09:12
The restaurant is required to clean all the way around their setup.
Gale A. Brewer
2:09:16
Okay.
2:09:16
Who's going to monitor that, though, Margaret?
Margaret Forgione
2:09:18
So sanitation is still monitoring that, and if they see an issue, they can issue a violation to the restaurant or they can tell us and we can get involved as well.
2:09:27
And then as you mentioned, the floors are removable for easy cleaning.
2:09:33
You mentioned paving.
2:09:34
That's why the setups needed also to be removable.
2:09:37
With water filled barriers, they're much easier to empty and move if we're coming through to pave.
2:09:42
We don't want a situation where we're paving around to set up.
2:09:44
We want to pave the street from curb to curb.
