Council Member Crystal Hudson inquires about the environmental sustainability features planned for the building design. Michael Berfield explains the standard practices and potential challenges in implementing sustainability measures.

  • Standard features include storm water retention and energy consumption enhancements
  • Special building materials and construction methods will be used to improve energy efficiency
  • Challenges exist in marrying building sustainability with city infrastructure
  • Berfield mentions $5 billion allocated to improve city infrastructure as part of the 'City of Yes' initiative, which could complement their sustainability efforts

Okay.
0:52:05
Can you speak to what environmental sustainability features you plan to include in the building design?
Michael Berfield
0:52:10
Yeah.
0:52:11
It's you know, it's funny.

I was listening when the previous project was discussing some of the stuff they went through in the Coney Island site, and, you know, the it's a it's a tricky issue because there are other things that we'll do with our building that are standard now in terms of, as he mentioned, retaining storm water, looking at, you know, ways to sort of enhance the building's energy consumption through the use of special building materials, how you construct the building, and so all of those things are sort of almost standard now.
0:52:42
So we'll be we'll be pursuing those.
0:52:43
There may be other things that come along as we get deeper into the design of the project.
0:52:49
The challenge is sort of marrying that with the city's infrastructure, you know, even if you're able to do things on your site.
0:52:56
A lot of times, the issues derive from the city's infrastructure, and luckily, our understanding is is that as part of the city of yes, there was $5,000,000,000 allocated to improve the city's infrastructure.
0:53:07
So I think that's exactly the type of thing that when combined with these newer construction methods for the building will make a big difference in sustainability.
