Council Member Yusef Salaam inquires about the NYPD's strategy for decreasing the occurrence of driving under the influence. NYPD representatives discuss various factors and approaches to address this issue.

  • NYPD relies on data-driven approaches, including setting up checkpoints based on collected data
  • The department emphasizes the importance of human intervention in identifying intoxicated drivers
  • External factors, such as the prevalence of rideshare services like Uber, are mentioned as potentially contributing to a decrease in DUI incidents
  • NYPD representatives note that the basic pattern of DWI enforcement hasn't changed significantly in recent years

Olufunmilola "Lola" Obe

The strategies that's the message into our officers?
Yusef Salaam
0:32:47
Yes.
0:32:47
Could you just clarify that?
0:32:48
Well, strategy to I guess not necessarily just the officers, but with regards to the people as well.
0:33:00
I mean I know we have the the palm card to assist in making sure that we have a safer safer streets in New York City.
0:33:08
But just wondering what the strategy would be around the around decreasing, you know, the occurrence of people driving under the influence.

So I think a lot of different factors come into play in this.
0:33:21
Like, one of the good ones is the prevalence with rideshare like Uber, etcetera.
0:33:25
I think hopefully you see a decrease as a result of that.
0:33:28
But in regards to our specific enforcement, again, we hate we have the data, we follow the data, we set up checkpoints.
0:33:35
One reason why we can't rely on cameras to do everything for us is because you need a human in the loop for a lot of this stuff.
0:33:42
A camera is never gonna know if a person is driving drunk.
0:33:45
But when we conduct an actual car stop on the Bell Parkway or something, the officer can then make a determination if this person is intoxicated and possibly save that driver's life or other people's lives.
0:33:54
I don't think anything has really changed in the avenue of DWI enforcement in the last recent years.
0:33:59
It's still basically, I think, the same pattern.
0:34:01
In regards to the specific stats you asked about, I just feel there's a lot of factors that come into play.
0:34:06
So I just wouldn't feel comfortable commenting on why that decrease may have happened for that one specific year.
